Sometimes we manage to lock the SIM card in the phone and without it, the phone can only be used in limited mode. But what if we've long forgotten the PIN to unlock the SIM card? What is a PIN and what is it for?

What is a PIN and what is it for?

PIN stands for Personal Identification Number. Each SIM card is assigned a 4-digit PIN, which prevents the SIM card or phone from being misused by strangers. The PIN can be changed at any time. The phone is activated by entering the PIN, which you are prompted to do every time you switch on the device. However, you can cancel this option in the phone menu.

Where can I find my PIN?

The original PIN can be found on the documents that came with your SIM card. However, if you've ever changed it, your operator doesn't keep track of PINs.

What is a PUK code and what is it for?

PUK is again an abbreviation from English, Personal Unlocking Key can be translated into English as Personal Unlocking Code. It is an 8-digit code that is used to unlock the SIM card. If you enter the PIN code incorrectly 3 times in a row, the SIM card will be locked and you need to enter the PUK code. After entering the PUK code, your phone will prompt you to choose a new PIN.

If you enter the PUK code incorrectly 10 times, the SIM card will be permanently blocked and a new SIM card will need to be issued. You will need to request a new SIM card from your operator.

Where can I find the PUK?

The PUK code can be found by scratching the security layer on the plastic card that came with your SIM card, or by contacting your operator; the operator keeps track of PUK codes.
